Keeping things nice and simple to bring the message across, and using giant emoticons because they attract people's attention.
The infamous Slow Emoticon created by ~inc, with some major smoothing applied to make it look good at large scale.

nice idea! The only thing I'd mention is to perhaps remove the pixels around the right-most pupil, I think it doesn't work after being scaled up.
