Comment-Soldiers Avatar by BoffinbraiN Comment-Soldiers Avatar by BoffinbraiN
:salute:

This avatar has been made for ~Comment-Soldiers, because I said I would. :dohtwo: :lmao: Also, I haven't done emoticons in ages, so it's time for a practise!

Little details on the design: the army-recruit's badge and shaven hair, and the logo, in the shape of a pen. :) Also note that he's not throwing the comment away - he's 'posting' it. :giggle:

I've learning something very interesting from making this avatar. If you make an animated GIF with a background that is mainly transparent, then the filesize, for some reason, is much higher than it is with the background made from a solid colour (in this case, giving the avatar a gradient background made the filesize 8KB, whereas when transparent it was 38KB.

I like comments, even if they aren't more than "cute" It just shows that you care and value the time people took to create said deviations

Sorry, can't do that. :giggle: As stated, this was made specifically for a club and that club is still using it.

The size difference comes from the fact that animations are optimized by storing changes per frame, but this trick uses transparency and stacking the frames pretty much, if you know what I mean, so the trick doesn't work at all if the background is transparent.

...But most of the transparent area doesn't change either. It starts off transparent, and then rarely changes, so why does this method not work?

Because you can't overwrite the part of the animation that happens over transparency by recoloring it, since stacking transparency back onto the part that's leaving the transparent background doesn't exactly accomplish anything but leaving a streaking effect. I learned this while I was assembling an Amy Rose avatar.

Mmm... I'm familiar with that effect. Still not entirely sure why it's so badly inefficient though. :slow: I want animated PNGs now! :shakefist:

But Firefox and IE don't support them, so no site will use it. :(

Mozilla should push to support it first, and the rest would follow. Maybe even Konqueror.

I must say - I am astonished at the level of detail in your animation dude. That is definately something I could do with working more on - I'm definately gonna be giving a little extra effort on animation now you've raised the bar with this bad boy!

With regards to the difference in filesizes, that is very intriguing indeed!

:aww: Oh, I do try my best to make sure my stuff doesn't suck, so that people like you have less need to rant about the state of the emoticons gallery. ;p Jedi still sets the benchmark for me.

Still waiting for animated PNGs (MNG) to become popular...

I must say - you have never struck me as one of the guilty offenders, your stuff is always topnotch. I dunno what to think about you fearing a melonhead-rant. I guess its kinda flattering, but.. I am a nice guy really ^^;

I would love to experiment with animated pngs, but I must admit - I haven't the foggiest how to do them.

Haha... I know you are. :)

And as for MNGs, the standard has been finalised for a while, but it just needs to be supported by browsers and graphics packages. [link]

Super sweet! :D And yeah, I noticed that about avatars and transparency. Not sure why, but I definitely think the file size limit for an avatar should be lifted up just a teeny bit more D:

One thing I'd point out though. Is it just me? or is the animation showing more than one frame of his hand when he salutes? I've had a problem like that before only it was much worse. Of course, it still could just be me. Smooth work ^^

That effect was deliberate. :slow: I was trying to achieve motion-blur. Got a better technique for that?

:iconlythero:
Lythero Featured By Owner Sep 12, 2007  Hobbyist Filmographer
ohh :slow: well if that's the case, then it works. I was just wondering. Although I do have a suggestion. If you select the after hand in each frame, and make it's transparency to say, 50 in properties, then it'd probably look more blurry. If you already have done that, then I couldn't notice ^^; you could even let another after hand image appear to make it more obvious (although have the third hand even more transparent) :paranoid: that's all I'd suggest, although it unfortunately may or may not affect the file size
