Comment Before You Favourite by BoffinbraiN Comment Before You Favourite by BoffinbraiN
:iconcommentplz: Comment Before You Favourite by BoffinbraiN

Comment before you favourite. Comment because you care. And spread the word!

Use the icon by putting :iconcommentplz: in your journal, deviation description or comment.
Use the stamp by putting :thumb43231916: in your journal or deviation description. Thumbnails do not work in comments.

If you're going to comment here or ask a question, read the FAQ first. 90% of people don't, and they look stupid for it.

This stamp was made for livius (journal) and melonhead-emotion (journal) and those hundreds of you who agree with them.

If a deviant displays this stamp or icon in their deviation description, they are indicating that they care more about comments than favourites, and will ignore people who fave just to get attention.

Show deviants some courtesy and respect by giving them critique and feedback if they request it. Nobody can force you to comment, but we hope people will read this and consider giving something back to the artists they love. This stamp has influenced and enlightened a lot of people, who say they feel better knowing they've made contact with the artists.

If you are the kind of person that favourites more than 10 things per day, then you're not using the system as it was intended. A favourite means you consider something to be really special, and they should not be overused, or they become worthless.

Favourites should not be a way of seeking attention - this is known as fav-bombing and is not welcomed. Prove that you care by saying what you like about the piece. Critique and praise alike, comments are a form of human social interaction that favourites can never give. That's the kind of active community we want in deviantART. Which would you rather receive?

Can I use this stamp/icon in my submissions? Yes, you can use it anywhere on deviantART.

Does order matter? Does it matter if I favourite before I comment? Don't be silly; of course not!

What if I'm too busy to comment? Consider coming back and commenting later.

Do short comments like 'Cool' or 'Nice!' count? If the deviant has specified that they wish to receive critique, then no.

What if the artist never replies to comments? Well, it's up to you to decide if you think the artist will appreciate your comment or not.

What if I never know what to say in a comment? See below for some awesome guides on how to write constructive critique.

Why does this stamp have more favourites than comments? Because this is just a typical example of a deviation on deviantART. At least by having a high number of favourites, it's increasing awareness.

For me, it's a tendency because I want opinion from people I don't know (and know, too) when they fave my work.

Thanks for making this... I hate when there are some people who only fave my art but don't comment, because then I'll think they are really don't care

I really don't see a point in commenting if I don't have anything to say.
Like yeah, getting comments make me feel like I'm actually worth something, but when all the comments are "cool" or"cute", they too lose meaning.
Sure, critique is nice and help you improve, but when all the comments you get are just hollow, meaningless words, I'd rather take the faves.

I only really fave something if I actually like it, and as the asshole I am, never pay any attention to the people who fave my stuff. Now, don't get me wrong; I love every single person who take the time to fave my art, I really do, but I just don't see a point in thanking them for liking my art. I'm sure they know I'm really grateful anyways. So just because someone only faves, doesn't mean they don't care.

I'd rather take one comment with c
ritique and praise alike every three months, than a lot of ass-kissers who only comment words with no true meaning behind them.
Though I do appreciate comments as a whole, I just don't want people to feel forced to comment on my stuff if they don't have anything special to say about it.

I'm sorry, I'm just so tired of people whining about more comments, when all they'll really get are hollow words and forced compliments.
Be grateful for what you get, even if it's just faves.

I agree with you.

I favorite a lot of pictures with commenting. I rarely comment since I don't want to give a comment that is meaningless.
SwedishFishWolf Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2016
Yeah, I feel you
I generally only ever comment on my friends works,
but if I have constructive, helpful criticism to give, I'll give it.
Just commenting 'cool', 'looks good' or 'well done' have kind
of lost its meaning to me, and as such I don't comment those things
on others work.
TheNobleOne15 Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2016  Hobbyist General Artist
I only comment when I really have something to say. Also, I sometimes find clusters of good works and thus I don't have the time to comment on them all. I tend to comment on my friends works as well. People need to know that when they get it favorite it probably means that the person liked the work so much that they added it to their favorites so that they could look at it again. I see no point in obsessing over whether the favorite was just to get attention or really genuine. When I get a favorite I just smile and delete the notification.
SwedishFishWolf Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2016
Exactly! I add the things I think look good to my favorites, and that's it.
Just because you favorite a lot of things does not mean you're an
attention-seeker either. That was a point I found people using a lot.
Of course, fave-bombing just one person might be a bit questionable.
I will admit, there was a time where I faved almost everything in my inbox,
hence the scary number of favorites I have. (I don't know why there are
that many though, I didn't fave that much?) Though I think that there's
a thin line between adding a few (more than just two or three) to your favorites
and fave-bombing. I often find really good artists with a lot of good art, and
add the pieces I like the most to my favorites, but I really try not to fave-bomb.
To me, fave-bombing is more annoying than rude.
On another note, I completely agree with you. You make some really good
points that I never even thought of including in my original comment.
We also seen to think alike; I, too, don't see the point in obsessing over
such small things, nor do I really care if people fave my artwork just to get
attention as I won't give them any. I also just smile and delete the notification.
TheNobleOne15 Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2016  Hobbyist General Artist
Yeah. I really hate it when people try to guilt you when they see you favorite a lot of things. But honestly, who cares? When you think about it, when somebody adds your work to their favorites there's a chance someone will go through their favorites and stumble into your works. In addition, each favorite will probably make your work more likely to appear (correct me if I'm wrong, I've only been a deviant for almost 3 months).

It's just another entrance to your prolife when you think about it. I make sure I don't fave-bomb; I only add about 2-3 works from somebody at the most. To be honest, I don't think many people make a big deal about faving without commenting as I got a lot of 'Thanks for the fav! It really means a lot to me!" on my page.
SwedishFishWolf Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2016
That's a smart point. Yeah, if you add someone's work
to your favorites, I guess it appears more. Or at least,
the person stumbling upon your favorites might get the
idea that their work is really good.

Yeah, I, too, do try really hard not to, but sometimes I just
find these artists where I let it slip. Thought I feel like it's
been a while since last.
But yeah, I don't really think that a lot of people actually
care, they just kind of take it and move on. Or they just
don't speak up about it. (I'm sorry if I'm not making any sense,
It's 5:30 am and I'm tired as heck)

I understand the meaning behind this stamp, but when I'm just browsing galleries and favoriting all the art, I don't want to spam the artist with comments on everything I fav. =P "This character is pretty" "I love her color scheme!" and the like is pretty much what I say. :P

Assassinendergirl Featured By Owner Nov 25, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I favorite something because I like it, or I find it helpful. Now it's insulting if I like a lot of things? I'm not referring to the stamp specifically, I'm talking about all the people in the comments that complain about people with a lot of favorites. Yes, I like art, suprise!

StarlightXSword Featured By Owner Edited Nov 8, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
If you still don't know ^^ ;
Scroll down to find the thumb code on the right side of the page →
It should be something like this: ( :thumb43231916: ) and you can copy and paste it onto your profile to use it.
crimsonknightgallant Featured By Owner Nov 8, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
so i have t paste on my profile? how?
StarlightXSword Featured By Owner Edited Nov 8, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
If you're on your computer, click the thumb code so the whole thing would be highlighted, then right click. (If you're on mobile, tap and hold till "copy" comes up) "Copy" and then go to your profile, for e.g. your deviant ID, edit widget, then "paste" the code into your bio.

I've looked at the previous comment and some seem really negative. In my opinion I prefer comments than favourites because I want to know how it looks and to get feedback on what needs to be fixed.
