Comment Before You Favourite by BoffinbraiN Comment Before You Favourite by BoffinbraiN
:iconcommentplz: Comment Before You Favourite by BoffinbraiN

Comment before you favourite. Comment because you care. And spread the word!

Use the icon by putting :iconcommentplz: in your journal, deviation description or comment.
Use the stamp by putting :thumb43231916: in your journal or deviation description. Thumbnails do not work in comments.

If you're going to comment here or ask a question, read the FAQ first. 90% of people don't, and they look stupid for it.

This stamp was made for livius (journal) and melonhead-emotion (journal) and those hundreds of you who agree with them.

If a deviant displays this stamp or icon in their deviation description, they are indicating that they care more about comments than favourites, and will ignore people who fave just to get attention.

Show deviants some courtesy and respect by giving them critique and feedback if they request it. Nobody can force you to comment, but we hope people will read this and consider giving something back to the artists they love. This stamp has influenced and enlightened a lot of people, who say they feel better knowing they've made contact with the artists.

If you are the kind of person that favourites more than 10 things per day, then you're not using the system as it was intended. A favourite means you consider something to be really special, and they should not be overused, or they become worthless.

Favourites should not be a way of seeking attention - this is known as fav-bombing and is not welcomed. Prove that you care by saying what you like about the piece. Critique and praise alike, comments are a form of human social interaction that favourites can never give. That's the kind of active community we want in deviantART. Which would you rather receive?

FAQ:

Can I use this stamp/icon in my submissions? Yes, you can use it anywhere on deviantART.

Does order matter? Does it matter if I favourite before I comment? Don't be silly; of course not!

What if I'm too busy to comment? Consider coming back and commenting later.

Do short comments like 'Cool' or 'Nice!' count? If the deviant has specified that they wish to receive critique, then no.

What if the artist never replies to comments? Well, it's up to you to decide if you think the artist will appreciate your comment or not.

What if I never know what to say in a comment? See below for some awesome guides on how to write constructive critique.

Why does this stamp have more favourites than comments? Because this is just a typical example of a deviation on deviantART. At least by having a high number of favourites, it's increasing awareness.

Excuse me, but would it be too much to ask if you may create a stamp like this, but instead saying "Read description before favoriting"? See, i keep receiving notifications that people are favoriting my artwork, and while this is always appreciated, sometimes i see people adding my artwork to collections where they do not belong. An example would be: I make an anthro character, but i add in the description that it isn't a "Sonic FC" However despite the obvious information in the description, someone adds the drawing to a Sonic related collection. I know most of the time this is unintentional, but honestly, this could be easily avoided if the deviant simply read the description before favoriting. If i am unsure if a character is anthro or Sonic, i will read the description of the deviation, since usually people will add that information there. I find it very insulting that since they obviously didn't read the description, they just assumed the character was a fan character.

This is never a problem with my fans and watchers, because 99% of the time they know that i do not make fan characters. So, i'd like a stamp to put on my front page, informing people to read the description of my deviations before adding them to specific collections.

Oh yes. Because people actually giving comments that can be full of grateful advice for future content is nothing but clickbait.

If they're going to make a stamp telling people to comment before you favorite, that pretty much means they're being ungrateful. Like, they should be THANKFUL that they have a lot of faves on their stuff, people don't ALWAYS want to have to comment. Because either they have nothing important to say or they suck at giving advice. The owner of the stamp acts like faves aren't GOOD enough. I understand if someone is just favebombing art, but that probably must mean that they really like all of their hard work.

If people not wanting to comment grinds this person's gears then oh well. People don't always get what they want.

Well I won't try and make it a bigger deal than it is then.
But I still think constructive feedback is a much better outcome.

Alright, sorry if I came off a bit rude.
I think so too, it's at least better than destructive criticism to be completely honest. Destructive criticism is just meaningless hateful comments spewing insults and nothing more. It makes people a prick.

Thanks for being calm and understandable about it. Have a nice day. :)

tbh this is the one way to guarantee meaningless comments. nearly every time i see this stamp or its icon in a description of art, the comments are almost always "Nice!" "Cool!" "Cute!" "Awesome!" and so on. Those arent worth any more than a fav imo.

i mean if you only care about the amount of comments, in a quantity over quality type of way, then i guess that will do well for you

I agree. In any case, artwork that is interesting will always receive comments, regardless of whether people are encouraged or reminded to leave them. Having said that, I do wish that there would be a way for amateur artists to get useful feedback, because all they ever seem to get is the type of pointless one word comments.

The second block of the description of this stamp just says that the favoriting-system of DeviantArt is to 100% GARBAGE!
I want a system where i can store deviations i like.
If they happen to be 100+ a day, SO BE IT!
The biggest problem might be the name; "favorites".
I fav things i like and would like to put into an individual album.

Indeed, i have over 1200 deviations 'bout "Undertale" in my folder because when i saw them, i liked them.
I pressed "favorite" to show admireration.

This stamp will under no circumstances be in my folder "Stamps i agree with of various topics"!
In this folder of mine are all stamps i agree with of various topics, unfortunatly i have to mark it as a "favorite" in order to put them into the album.

I only favorite and run, because I'm afraid to give criticism, because I don't know how well the artist is going to handle it.  I also don't want to say just, "Cool." or "Nice." Because it would be awkward.

What I don't like is people who self-advertise, linking thumbnails of all their artworks and links to their social media pages in my profile comments section or on my deviation comments.  Now that is really discourteous. >_<

To be blunt I really don't like it when people fav and run, Angry emoticon  I mean yes commenting may take time - oh my gosh here a another fact, so did creating that piece of art/writing/etc. Angry stare  I mean, people say leaving 'nice,' 'good job' 'cute' or comments of the like are awkward, fair enough, then here a basic guide to writing a better comment Facepalm , you (typically) fav a piece of art because you liked something about it, so just use your limited intelligence to write that something down! (Sorry for the small rant, too many favs and few comments these days...it gets to a person! Twitch 2  ) Just be nice and comment everyone, it makes peoples days! :D

Yes, it is. I currently have no ideas what to do, and I try to do something, like playing video games to get some sort of inspiration. But this is something all artists suffer from at some points.
